Obama vs Ambani: Who's Actually Right About India?


Two of the most influential personalities of our time - Barack Obama and Mukesh Ambani - shared their insights on the future of India at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit on 1st December. While Obama had some interesting thoughts to share about Modi and the current similarities between India and the US, Ambani shed light on where India's progress is headed next.

Here are 11 significant things said about India by the two personalities:

1. Obama on diversity:

"America and India are alike, being defined by many different languages, dialects genders and orientations…every caste, colour and creed."

2. Ambani on India’s new digital revolution:

"Just one year back, India was ranked 150th in the world for mobile broadband. Now it is No. 1 after the launch of Jio. Today, Indians consume more mobile broadband data than users in the U.S. and China.

3. ...and the importance of data:

"If data is destiny, new India is well and truly ready for its new 'Tryst with Destiny'. In the coming years, we will see many such success stories from India."

4. Obama on democracy:

"Democracy is under threat today. I believe that a partnership between the world's oldest democracy and the world's largest democracy is the key… We can help chart course for a better future, especially when democracy is itself being questioned."

5. Ambani on progress in education:

"We need digital tools and innovation to break geographical, social and economic barriers… Artificial intelligence-based technologies can bring education to many children."

6. Obama on politicians…

"One thing I will say about politicians as a general rule: Rarely do elected officials get out too far ahead of public opinion. If you see a politician doing things that are questionable, you should ask yourself: "Am I supporting the values I am hearing from this politician?" Politicians tend to be mirrors in the society." 

7. ...and Modi:

"I like him [Narendra Modi]. I think he has a vision for the country that he is implementing…. My goal here is not to disclose every private conversation that I have with other leaders. I think his impulse was to recognise the importance of Indian unity."

8. Ambani on the future of India’s GDP growth…

"Today, India's GDP is about $2.5 trillion and ranks Number 6 in the world," he said. "Can we cross the $10 trillion mark by 2030 and close the gap between India and China? Yes, we can!" 

9. ...and on competing with China:

By the middle of the 21st century, India's rise will be higher than China's….India will provide a superior and different development model of equitable and inclusive growth.."
